Hire a Solo Drone Photographer or a Company?

If you're thinking about hiring a drone photographer, you have a choice between hiring an individual or one of the emerging companies in this space.

As you contemplate your options, I'd encourage you to consider the following points:

  • Working with a solo drone photographer gives you the ability to speak directly with the person who will fly and shoot your project. If you're local to the flight location, you can meet with the photographer and walk through the project and explain the areas you'd like them to highlight.
  • National or regional companies often act as brokers, sourcing drone pilots for projects sold by their company. This option is good if you need to have pictures or videos taken of many locations across a region or country. They'll coordinate all of the work, handle collection and editing of the content, and provide everything back to you in a nice package.

Before committing to either option, be sure to ask if all pilots will have their Part 107 certificate which is required for commercial work in the United States. If you hire a drone photographer who is not certified under Part 107, you could be subject to a fine by the FAA.

It's also good to ask about insurance. Most pilots will have $1M in insurance coverage. Accidents that cause damage are rare when using professional pilots, but it's good to have insurance for peace of mind.
